Starting off with the cheapest option, a round-trip flight from Los Angeles to Honolulu comes in at $189. As you can see below, there is still plenty of availability throughout January and February.
United operates these flights, and the price is for the airline’s basic economy fare. Unfortunately, this ticket class only comes with a personal item, not a carry-on item or a checked bag. If you want to check a bag, you’ll have to hand over an extra $35 each way.
The $70 total in checked bag fees will bring your trip total to $259 — still a good deal.
Texans can head to Hawaii for cheap as well. For example, flying from Dallas to Kauai is $363 — almost $200 cheaper than usual, according to Google Flights.
This will be a round-trip journey but with separate tickets on separate airlines. Luckily, each ticket comes with a carry-on bag included in the price, so you won’t have to pay extra fees.
Maximize your purchase
Depending on which airline you fly, you can use the related cobranded credit card to book your flight and maximize your earnings. If you don’t have a cobranded airline card, use a credit card that earns bonus points on airfare purchases, such as:
- Chase Sapphire Preferred Card: 2 points per dollar spent on travel
- American Express® Gold Card: 3 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly through the airline or American Express Travel
- The Platinum Card® from American Express: 5 points per dollar spent on airfare when booked directly through the airline or American Express Travel on up to $500,000 of these purchases per calendar year
- Citi Premier® Card (see rates and fees): 3 points per dollar spent on airfare
- Chase Sapphire Reserve: 3 points per dollar spent on airfare
Bottom line
If you want to soak up the Hawaii sun this winter, jump on these discounted flights quickly. There is plenty of availability from different cities across the U.S., so you’re likely to find a date, time and departure city that work for you.
