There is an incredible deal right now for lucky American Airlines AAdvantage elite members who have upgrade certificates to use. You can get confirmed in business class by using a systemwide upgrade certificate if you book premium economy on almost any American flight, but you’ll need to act fast. This incredible offer expires at Midnight on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.
“American is making it easier for our most loyal customers to use their systemwide upgrades,” a company spokesperson told TPG. “We know systemwide upgrades are a valuable Loyalty Point Reward chosen by members and availability varies, so we’re excited to offer this to our AAdvantage members.”
There are a few additional things to be aware of with this promotion.
- You must travel in August 2026.
- Upgrades are available on flights to and from Asia, Australia, Europe and South American but exclude flights to Delhi, Doha, Shanghai and Tel Aviv.
- Paid fares only. The promotion doesn’t apply to mileage award tickets.
- Business class seats must be available for sale, but it doesn’t matter what type of business class fare is available; it can be discounted inventory.
- As previously mentioned, you must book and request the upgrade by Midnight tomorrow night.
This is where a subscription to TPG parent company Red Ventures-owned Expert Flyer can really come in handy, enabling you to look up the number of business-class seats still available for sale on a particular route.

There are complete details on the promotion at a dedicated page here, which also has a list of frequently asked questions.
I have AAdvantage Executive Platinum status and a few expiring upgrade certificates. I needed to find a flight back from Europe in August.
Here’s an example from my own searches. I found a one-way premium economy flight from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG) to New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) for $1,557, with plenty of business-class seats available for purchase.

If I book that flight, I can then call American and apply one of my expiring systemwide upgrade awards, which should clear within three business days and well before they expire on March 31, 2026.

AAdvantage members can claim systemwide upgrades as a reward at various levels of Loyalty Points earning, beginning at just 175,000 Loyalty Points.

Bottom line

This is a huge win for AAdvantage elite members, as confirmable upgrades have been harder to come by over the years. If you haven’t booked your August flights yet, this may be the perfect moment if you can take advantage of this incredible offer.
